Cold Showers: The Ultimate Mood Booster?

I’m always preaching the power of routines and habits to set you up for success. Simply having that organized daily routine will free up your mind to think creatively and to be more fully present with each task because you know that you’ve planned enough time to get everything done!

One of my favourite routines, before I start my work for the day, is taking a cold shower. This is usually after my workout. The cold shower floods my body with “happiness hormones” and increase my alertness and focus. By the time I sit down to work, I’m excited and ready to go.

Healthline states “For people with depression, cold showers can work as a kind of gentle electroshock therapy. The cold water sends many electrical impulses to your brain. They jolt your system to increase alertness, clarity, and energy levels. Endorphins, which are sometimes called happiness hormones, are also released. This effect leads to feelings of well-being and optimism.” 

Other benefits include brown fat metabolism which is a type of fat that is activated by cold exposure. Besides that, it is a hermetic stressor that will increase your overall resiliency and immunity.

If you haven’t tried it yet, I would highly recommend it! Just remember, it’s only uncomfortable for about 5 seconds. But it’s that discomfort and mild shock that gets your brain firing and will make you feel amazing after!

If you haven’t yet, give it a go! A warm shower at night will definitely relax you, but a cold shower in the morning will have you ready to go!
